Replacements for EOS 1000Fgreenspun.com : LUSENET : Camera Equipment : One Thread |
My 13 year old EOS 1000F had a problem. Suddently it stoped working (blank display even with a new battery) and, at best, I could make pics but with no flash. It wouldn't focus with the flash on. The guys at Cannon told me the problem was in the flash but they could do nothing since there aren't anymore replacements for this old model. At least in Europe. I entered this forum to know if this problem is familiar to anyone of you and if you believe I could find any replacements in the US for a model which is at least 15 years old. I would appreciate any answer. Thanks.Miguel

Are you looking for replacement parts for your camera, or are you looking for a replacement camera?Parts might be hard to find (Idon't know) and the cost of replacing them could be more than your camera is worth. Replacing the camera is easy enough. The 1000 was replaceed by the 500, which was replaced by the 500N, which was replaced by the current 300.

Thanks Jim, for your answer. Actually I was looking for both, replacement parts and replacement of my present camera. They do not have the replacement parts in Europe, it seems Cannon only guarantees replacements for 9 years after launching a model. It was helpful you told me the model that replaces the old 1000F. I was today looking around for the price of the EOS300. It is about 300 USD. How much does it costs in the US? I would expect it to be cheaper. Greetings. Miguel

The EOS 300 (Called the Rebel 2000 in the USA) is listed at $250 at B&H Photo (A reliable international discount dealer). The EOS 500N/Rebel G is priced $15 less, but the 300/Rebel 2000 is a nice step up.

I wonder if 13 and 15 years is a slight over-estimate!The EOS 1000 and EOS 1000F, were first released in 1990, then replaced by the EOS 1000N and EOS 1000FN in 1992 before being replaced by the EOS KISS/500/REBEL XS in 1993. As Jim pointed out, these have subsequently been replaced by New EOS KISS/500N/REBEL G, then by the EOS KISS III/300/REBEL 2000, and now by the newly announced EOS KISS III L
For an EOS chronology, consult: eosdoc or Canon

Julian, Thanks for the input. Actually, I am sure the camera has more than 10 years. I certainly bought it before 1990, probably in 87. In fact, I boughtit in Lisbon, Portugal which is a country certainly not famous for showing up the latest developments in image technology. Your info was important to select the camera I want to buy. What do you think about the EOS300? The price seems fair and it is more than enough considering my skils. Greetings

1990 is more realistic, according to the Canon Camera museum. That would make your camera 11 years old. You can check the exact date of manufacture by consulting this link.As you can probably tell, when I reached the limits of my old EOS 1000FN (even after I modifi ed it :-) I replaced it with an Elan 7E.
You do not say what is your budget, but an EOS 300 is a very capable replacement for your EOS 1000. And if you do not have a large investment in EOS lenses, then it would be wise to look at competing new and secondhand offerings from other manufacturers.
Cheers
