Syria/Iran: What does the future hold?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Anarchy 2 : One Thread |
Well I dont watch the news as much as I used to or want to anymore. But I have seen a little bit about this whole Iran/Syria thing. Apparently Syria killed the Lebanesse Prime Minister. And Iran and N. Korea have nukes. The US is spying heavly on Iran in turn Iran has made an alliance with Syrian. For some background on Syrian/Lebanesse relations this is from the CIA site...Syria maintains about 16,000 troops in Lebanon, based mainly east of Beirut and in the Bekaa Valley. Syria's troop deployment was legitimized by the Arab League during Lebanon's civil war and in the Ta'if Accord. Damascus justifies its continued military presence in Lebanon by citing Beirut's requests and the failure of the Lebanese Government to implement all of the constitutional reforms in the Ta'if Accord. Israel's withdrawal from southern Lebanon in May 2000, however, encouraged some Lebanese groups to demand that Syria withdraw its forces as well. The passage of UNSCR 1559 in early October 2004 - a resolution calling for Syria to withdraw from Lebanon and end its interference in Lebanese affairs - further emboldened Lebanese groups opposed to Syria's presence in Lebanon.
My question is what do you think is going to happen in this situation? Bush doesnt have to worry about reelection and Cheney will never get nominated. So I do think that there will be a war real soon. All I can say is that things are getting really figity over here in the Air Defence world. (Remember how I said months ago about N. Korea).
This is what I think will happen. Bush and the US got a big black eye from the Iraq war. The world hates us. So therefore we will not strike Iran or Syria. Instead Isreal will do it for us. This will cause a huge war an the US will step in and, trying to be the good guy, will say, "Hey, UN, we need peacekeepers... US led peacekeepers." Then the good ole US of A will look like the good guy and get back on track with the UN, Germany, France, and well... every other forward thinking nation in the world. Thats my thoery......

Going into Iran would be just about the dumbest thing Dubya could ever do. Ask anyone from Iran, they'll tell you that most Iranians WANT western-style democracy. There is a huge segment of the population that's under 30 and they all hate the Ayatollahs and they hate Islamic fundamentalism. If left to their own devices for another five or six years, they may just overthrow the Ayatollahs and actualy create a democracy. But if we go in there and start letting the lead fly and the napalm spill, we'll fuck that up for sure. We'll make them hate us, and we'll be giving the fundamentalists ammunition. No, we need to stay the fuck back, let them do things their way, let them build a democracy on their own terms. As for Syria...I couldn't give a shit. They aren't a threat to the US, so let them be. Not worth more American lives.

Anti's got a good point. All we needed to do is to just plant the seeds in the minds of the common man in the Middle East instead of just going in all guns ablazin'. Let the under 30 crowd open a can of whoop-ass on the psycho Islamic fundamentalists and let them go from there.

I lived in Iran for six years. They might want greater freedoms but no one wants anything like the circus you have in america. In the last few years, you have succeeded in making yourselves the most hated nation on this planet. Even here in the UK, mention of the american troops brings a barrage of laughter at the general incompetence and the mess that you have created. You might think you have it all, but if u take a step back and look at yourselves, you will realise you live in a dream world and that the world doesnt revolve around you.
