When President Bush began his first term, he invited the Congressional Black Caucus to the white house to try and get their support. He was rebuffed. Will they be invited again? If I were leading the Caucus, I would invite the President to the Caucus and get aboard the Issue of Education (No Child Left Behind), the Faith-Based Initative, Unification of the Contry (Black and White), and Winning the War on Terrorism. All of those are issues that face all Americans. This would then give tthem the political capital to get some of the pet issues. Rather than fighting Justice Thomas, I would support the president and insist that he name a moderate black to the Supreme Court. I would also try to get more lower court black judges who would in time be elevated to the Supreme Court.

I am not optimistic about a CBC meeting with President Bush. Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA) was re-elected to Congress on Tuesday after a brief hiatus. McKinney made some of the most vile and vicious remarks about Bush complicity shortly after 9-11. She is not a uniter and makes no pretentions aobut her divide and conquer agenda. Unless she has changed her political rhetoric it is unlikely that she, Maxine Waters (D-CA), Sheila Ann Jackson (D-TX) and senior CBC statesman John Conyers (D-MI) will be conciliatory towards President Bush.
