Happy Halloween??

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Ask Jesus : One Thread

As a kid I always went trick or treating. Sometimes I dressed as a pirate. I was a vampire one year. been a pumpking. a woman. twice.

So some Christians have objections to such games on Halloween. What do y'all think? I just wanted a lot of candy

I can't eat the chewy ones this year. They pull my dentures out.

My parish celebrates "Halloween" in the context of its original purpose. "Halloween" means '"hallowed evening" or "holy evening", the eve of all saints. We have a celebration in the parish school, on the evening of the 30'th. Many adults in the parish volunteer to run the event. The evening begins with Mass. Then there are games in the gym for the children of various ages. Safe "trick or treating" within the school building (each classroom has an adult in costume to pass out goodies). Refreshments are provided for adults and children. The children come in costume, but no ghouls, goblins, vampires, werewolves, devils, etc. are allowed. No figures from horror movies. Many children dress as their favorite saints, but others come as policemen, firemen, doctors and nurses, priests and nuns, angels, kings and queens, chefs, construction workers, soldiers, sailors, athletes, etc. Then of course there are always the imaginative few who come as a flower garden or a potato or a butterfly. Good clean, safe fun for the children, and a time to remember those Catholics who have preceded us, and who have contributed to the growth of our Church. That makes for a truly hallowed e'en.

Over-react? I've had kids tell me that they do not take part in Halloween because it is the "Devil's Birthday". Amazing!

I wonder if their parents told them.
