His father's name was David Poe Junior, he was raised by one, John Allan. Hence the 'Allan' in his name.

My text book says that Poe was orphaned at two years of age and was taken in-but never adopted-by a wealthy family in Richmond, Virginia. It doesn't state whether or not it was his aunt and uncle.

Yes, Edgar Allen Poe was adopted. In my note he was adopted by a man named John Allen. He took Poe in at the age of 3 years-old. John Allen was a prosperous merchant in Richmond, Va.

Poe was never OFFICIALLY adopted. His uncle John Allan took him in and raised him. His aunt loved him unconditionally, wheras his uncle and him tended to fight and not get along. Poe chose to take the Allan name, but there was no formal document that says he was adopted. He was simply "taken in."

Poe was never adopted. Altough the Allan family took him in and cared for him they never adopted him. Poe accompanied them on their travels to and from England and had a very good relationship with John Allan's first wife. Despite this is place in the Allan household was an uncertain one.

Edgar Allan Poe was never adopted by anyone. The Allans took him in when his mother died of TB only a month before he turned 3 years old. They were not related to the Poes. His middle name was not Allan, he started using the name himself. John Allan never really accepted him as a son and his wife apparently tried to overcompensate for that. She was overindulgent to say the least. They eventually had their own, biological children, and when John Allan died, he left Poe out of his will. John Allan, were he alive today, would probably be dumbfounded and more than a little aggravated that his name has survied through the last 155 years, but only because of his association with Edgar Allan Poe! Poe's wife was his first cousin Virginia Clemm and he married her when she was only 13 years old.
