"American Standard Safety Code for Elevators"greenspun.com : LUSENET : Elevator Problem Discussion : One Thread |
My boss has recently assumed responsibility for facilities management and has detailed me to locate the "American Standard Safety Code for Elevators". I'm having trouble locating something by that name online. I'm finding many references TO it, particularly in job announcements and RFPs, but nothing that describes it. I have found ANSI codes - is the "American Standard Code" the same as the ANSI code when it comes to elevator safety? Or is this something I'll need to keep looking for? I also saw a reference to the ASME Safety Code - again, is this the same thing? Any help is much appreciated.

I think your boss wanted AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD SAFETY CODE FOR ELEVATORS commonly known for ANSI A17.1 it was changed a few years ago to ASME instead of ANSI, what you need to look for is the code book that your elevator was installed under, the date that the contract for installation of the elevator was signed by the owner. You should have a sticker on your mainline disconect per machine room per unit. You might have a number of differant code book for your building, each one has certain changes over others. To get started you might get the ASME A17.3-2002 for existing elevators as a minimum standard for older equipment. Make a list of all your equipment and check with your local inspector for what code book to use.
