Stock Market

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread

I'm so happy I may soil myself! The Nasdaq is coming back!!! I won't have to find a job after all. Ha! Any other stock investers out there?

I had this interesting argument with a friend who thinks anyone who buys stocks has no right to call themselves an invironmentalist. No integrity etc?

Anyone have a thought on this one? Personally I can't seem to decide if he has a point or not???

I actively trade the shares I recieved as part of my severence bonus in 2001. I also make my environment the way I want it. The way I want it around me is my oaks, gardens, privet hedge, nursury, moss beds and most of all ME NOT SLAVING IN THAT PLANT. Twenty years was enough :>) So you see we investors are environmentalists in the sense that we have the time to fashion our small corner of the world and we contribute less to the pollution factor by reduced travel ( I only drove 870 miles last year ). The corporations we invest in are going to keep rolling along anyway and society will never become a total crew of greens, so make your life comfortable, improve your corner and feel good knowing you did your part. Dont feel guilty about not doing more because making yourself suffer does no more to the big picture than comfortably stewarding your little corner. I just ignore anybody with the J.C. syndrome weather they are a bible thumper, greenie, or whatever

I consider myself a "greenie, tree hugger, animal rights activist, and all that" and we have all our IRA monies tied up in mutual funds, the Janus group specifically. We lost at least half our money last year, and this past quarter was the first one in a long while that showed a positive gain in our monies (finally!!!).

So, may I join you Kirk, in doing the Snoopy dance of joy over the better news about the stock market ;-)!!!

Investing money in anything, whether it is a bank, savings and loan, or the Market, is what allows our fair country to be able to grow and capitalism to spread from the smallest self-employed businessman to the biggest, hotshot CEO. You gotta have the money behind you to be able to "do" anything, unless you are so lucky as to be independently wealthy and don't require having to borrow large sums of money to develop and operate your business!

Imho, investing in anything, especially the Market, is investing in your belief that America is still the greatest nation in the world, and that you have hope for Her continuing greatness. And, being the Libertarian that I am, I also consider investing one of our best "freedoms" we have left, "putting your money where your mouth is" is one of the truest methods of personal expression we have. For example, if you really detest Proctor and Gambles many animal rights violations and policies, your best way to express this is by investing heavily into their fiercest competitors, along with boycotting their products!
