Poe was never on any drugs, many thought he was on opium because of certain references in his literature. If he was on opium, which he was not, many medical advisors say that it was used as a medical treatment. Opium was a common drug used for treatment back in his day.

LSD and coccaine were both legal drugs in Poe's time, which is not to say that they didn't have the same effect that they do today, just that not enough people thought that effect was bad. Poe, just like Freud and countless other geniuses used LSD and coccaine for recreation. Many of his stories were probably written while he was high, but that doesn't change the degree of his genius anymore than it does Freud's or Osborne's. If you want more information, there is a great documentary on the History Channel about coccaine and LSD that discusses Poe's addiction.

Nope, sorry, Poe never used LSD . . . I repeat . . . Poe NEVER USED LSD. To claim otherwise will require some rather interesting proof. Regardless of what error might have been made on this supposed History Channel documentary, there is no evidence that Poe was addicted to, or even a regular user of any drug other than alcohol, and even that is greatly exaggerated.

Me and Edgar Allen Poe both dropped acid back in the day. He told me storys of how sweet his cousin's puss was and that he was drunk when he married her.
