Was Edgar Allen Poe's wife, Virginia, alive when he wrote "The Raven"
-- Anonymous, December 16, 2003
Virginia died in the beginning of 1847 (Jan.30, if I remember well), while "The Raven" was published about two year earlier (Jan.29, 1845). Yours sincerely, Raven's Shade (Belgium).

Virginia was showing the first signs of sickness that had killed other women in Poe's life so it might be part retropsect projected to a logicla fear for the future. Other stories that seem presumptive of Virginia''s fate are before her death. "Eleanora" seems post-death but is not.
