What are the symbols of the AME church and what define them?

Answers

We, as AMEs, subscribe to all the "standard" Methodist/Chriatian symbols, however the cross and anvil is unique to our denomination. I have a fair understanding of that but rather than leave somethign important out, I will do some research first.

The cross represents Christ, and the anvil is a symbol of the blacksmith shop. Richard Allen purchased a blacksmith shop and had it hauled to 6th & Lombard Streets in Philadelphia, PA. The church's first services were held in this building. I hope this helps.

The Cross symbolizes the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the power of Salvation, and the God's abounding grace. The Anvil symbolizes the enduring spirit of the founding fathers of African Methodism. A converted blacksmith's shop once served as a house of worship and was called BETHEL, meaning "House of God." The blacksmith shop contained an anvil used to pound and shape metal ores. The anvil is known by blacksmiths as an indestructible, unwearable object. A blacksmith may die from exhaustion, but the anvil never fails and lasts throughout lifetimes. So it is with God; He cannot be worn down and He is eternal. The anvil represents the AME beginning and the lasting strength of our Lord
