Ok, I own a Panasonic DVD Recorder which you can record directly to dvd-r or dvd-ram. When recording directly to dvd-r before finalizing, I cannot edit out commercials. But, when recording directly to dvd-ram, I can edit out at will. I want to be able to take what I have recorded from either dvd-r or dvd-ram, edit out the commercials and be able to transfer to a cd-r as a vcd. I collect Star Trek episodes and I can't quite figure out how to do this. can you please help?

Such conversions are possible. http://www.vcdhelp.com should have some guides on doing this. DVD2SVCD (http://dvd2svcd.doom9.net) can be used to convert DVD to VCD. I think the program DVDX can also do this. There may be others. You could probably even use TMPGenc. You will have to either edit the commercials out on your DVD recorder or buy a video editor. I personally recommend MPEG2VCR at http://www.womble.com. It's a little expensive, but it's worth every penny. You can save money if you buy the MPEG-1 only version which could be used to edit VCD video, but I think the full version which edits MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video is the most useful.
