Live Holy! What do we stand for?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

This goes back to my previous question askink what do we stand for. I realize that no one is perfect and that we can only srtive to be what God has called us to be. The Bible tells us in the book of Matt. that divorce was not so from the beginning and that if you remarry while your former spouse is still living that you are in adultry. Plain and Simple, it's in the book.(It does also state what you can do for marital unfaithfulnes)Now do people actually think that God will uphold you in sin (divorced and re married while the former wife is still living). I realize that we are under God's Grace but wouldn't you think that God's grace and mercy would help you to see that sin that you are in so that you may come out of it. The fact of the matter is that God will not uphold you in the wrong. The Bible says that His grace endures forever to those who LOVE Him. Now, if you love Him the Bible says keep His comandments. If you are remaining in sin and are still doing wrong and knowing that you are wrong, Grace is going to run out. Stick to the word.

When you repent of your sins and give your life to Christ, correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't God, through Jesus Christ, forgive us of our sins and wipes our sins clean? Isn't that what the Bible says?

The problem is that many Christians (and denominations) pick and choose which laws they want to follow.

Should we continue sinning that grace may abound? NO.

If you know what God says about divorce and remarriage, and you choose to ignore it and do what you want to do, you can expect him to forgive, but you cannot expect him to bless your marriage.

He forgave David, but not after killing the bastard child.

If you don't like God's law, you don't have to follow it.

You just have to answer for the consequences of disobedience.

I am sorry Rev. Harper but how can you say that Jesus will forgive toy whlie you are still in sin? That is something He won't do. Do you actually think that God upholds sin. He will not only take away the blessings from the marriage but He will not forgive you as long as you are still in ADULTRY. And what you said about God not blessing the maggiage but forgiving the sin just makes no sense at all. Didn't Jesus teach forgive and forget? If He is not blessing you that could be because you are outside of His will and that is sin!

Ms. Olivia Brewster: Yes He does forgive us of our sins but how can one be forgiven of a sin that he or she is still in? If you marry and then divorce and remarry while the first spouse is still living that is adultry. Now do you think that God will forgive someone of adultry who is still in it? > Read Matthew 19:3-9

1. So, should the person with the "Adulterous" marriage divorce that person, ADDING yet another sin to the mix? I think not.

2. I never said God would bless the new marriage. Read my post AGAIN.

3. Jesus forgave the woman at the well who had 5 husbands (who were still alive, otherwise she wouldn't have been in trouble), and told her to go and SIN NO MORE....

Q.E.D. (Sorry, Bro. Bill.....)

One man's opinion:

This discussion, the portion of the Sermon on the Mount that deals with the Law making comparisons to what Moses said and what Jesus says is to show his disciples and us how impossible it is for us to be saved if we depend upon our keeping every jot and tittle of the law. For example, look at verse 21 and 22: 21"You have heard that the law of Moses says, ‘Do not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ 22 But I say, if you are angry with someone, you are subject to judgment! If you call someone an idiot, you are in danger of being brought before the high council. And if you curse someone, you are in danger of the fires of hell. What man or woman has not been angry at someone, even to the point of wishing them dead? Are we all lost for that? Does grace cover that? Or try verse 27 and 28:27: “You have heard that the law of Moses says, ‘Do not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust in his eye has already committed adultery with her in his heart." If we try what Jesus said, we will all be walking around one-handed and one-eyed. And then to divorce, verse 31, 32: “You have heard that the law of Moses says, ‘A man can divorce his wife by merely giving her a letter of divorce.’ 32 But I say that a man who divorces his wife, unless she has been unfaithful, causes her to commit adultery. And anyone who marries a divorced woman commits adultery. This passage on divorce also must include the verses concerning vows. I consider Jesus was saying with Paul too that it is impossible to really "divorce" a wife. Once we consumate that marriage, that is your mate forever she/he will always be a part of you. In this discourse on the law, Jesus was teaching the fallacy of trying to keep the law as taught by the religious leaders (writers) and Pharisees of His earthly days. On deed he say that in order to be a part of the Kingdom of Heaven, his disciples would have to do better than those at keeping the Law. As St. Paul so aptly put it, the purpose of the LAW was to drive us to GRACE and after the Law has driven us to GRACE it is no longer effective for us because the law is for law breakers.

One man's opinion. By the way, I am not a theologian, not seminary trained, just use what God has given me to rightly divide the word of God.

BE Blessed

Rev. Harper I am sorry for reading your statement wrong. But I must tell you that the Bible never says that the women at the well was ever married to the 5 men. It was simply saying that she was sleeping with men who were not her husbands but someone else's husband. As the story stated none of the men she was with was her husbands so Jesus told her to go and sin no more. She could be forgiven because she was not married to any of the men. Also, if you remarry after divorce it is not honored by the Lord any way because it is outside of what he said to do. So if you divorce it was not honored in the first place

[sigh]

John 4:16-18 (NIV)

He told her, "Go, call your husband and come back." "I have no husband," she replied. Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true."

1 Corinthians 6:15-16 (NIV) Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh."

She clearly had been married 5 times. Even if she had just been sleeping with them, the act alone made her "one flesh" with those 5.

Bro Wesley, The scriptures speak plainly. The sin of unbelief. rejecting the saving grace of Christ is the only sin that cannot be forgiven. Don't labor with the details. Jesus called it gaging on a gnat while swallowing a camel.
