There are three movies which promise to be the buzz among church folks for months to come. The first is a gospel comedy-drama called The Fighting Temptations starring Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Beyonce` Knowles. This film uses some of the best talent in urban hip-hop and gospel artists. The O'Jays acapella remake of Paul Simon's classic "Loves Me like a Rock is a can't miss. The other two films are strictly drama. Aussie actor Mel Gibson's "The Passion" won't be released for months, but Jewish and Christian commentators already are debating whether its gory treatment of Jesus' death will provoke anti-Semitic debate. Another filem called "The Gospel of John," premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival somewhat ironically on Sept. 11, 2003.

"John" opens in four U.S. markets Sept. 26, then 75 others through the autumn, mostly in cinemas across the southeastern Bible Belt. Gibson's movie, which he financed, co-wrote, produced ($30 million) and directed, puts all the dialogue into the ancient Aramaic and Latin languages. "John" has a different oddity. The script is in English but all of the dialouge in the movie is based on the entire Gospel narrative explained in John's gospel. These lingusitic innovations for both movies will be edifying to both the lay and seminarian alike. I'm looking forward to see all three and I might write a review since I am an amateur movie critic :-) QED
