I live in NJ...does anyone know what is a reasonable cost for tuning a piano? And how often one should do it?

Tune a minimum of once a year. Twice a year is better, with the climate/humidity change--about 2-3 weeks after you turn on your furnace and 2-3 weeks after you turn on your air conditioner. On the west coast, the price is anywhere from $75-125 per tuning. I'd advise to have a registered technician do it if possible. They usually do a better job so the piano stays in tune longer (good "pin technique"), and they can fix any other little problems before they get to be big problems.

I'd say anon has given you excellent advice. His cost estimates seem to be right on track as well. Here in the midwest $100 is what my piano technician generally charges (although he is kind enough to give me a "piano teacher discount" of $80 since I send him so many referrals.)
