OGM is the way to go ! AVI is out like 8 track tapes

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Animes : One Thread

AVI is going the way of the 8 track tape. OGM is the way to go now. It's the video counterpart of ogg vorbis audio.

Tired of watching only subbed or only dubbed? Wish you could have both, but can't because it takes to long to find them all or no hard drive space? OGM is a good format that supports dual audio tracks for the same size file as an AVI. Just click on the icon to switch from one to the other even mid episode.

Must have the proper codecs installed to watch ogm, but it's worth it. It's the only way to go for all you die hard fans.

I have Cowboy Bebop, Rurouni Kenshin, Fushigi Yuugi, Jubei-chan, InuYasha, Blue Gender and Trigun ALL in dual audio format. And that's just the tip of the iceburg of what's out there.

So where can you *find* all of this OGM stuff?

-- Anonymous, July 16, 2003

That info would have been helpful :)

most p2p don't support ogg vorbis or ogm. WinMX will find ogm if you search under "all files," but not many people are clued into it yet so it may be hard to locate there.

I am a recent die hard irc convert. Alot of the bigger chans like #anime-archive, #anime-xtreme, #anime-4ever, #animejunkies, #animehq, #anime-mx etc are now encoding in ogm

.ogm GUIDE: http://ld-anime.faireal.net/guide/ogm-en

It's a great guide for the beginner. I've been singing .ogm praises since this past February, when I DLed all of the Hellsing eps.

To play these files, I use BSPlayer. In the past, I have had some minor problems playin .ogm files (error messages pop up), but I am computer savvy, and changed some of the options/settings and now it works fine.

:oD I love .ogms!

OGM is crap. So tell me, how great it is when I download a new anime just released in Japan? Where is the dubbed and subbed tracks? That's right, non-existant.

Also if you are a die hard fan, you'd be buying the dvds, like the rest of us die hard fans.

I have Jubei-chan, Blue Gender, Noir, et cetera on dvd in multiple languages.

As soon as I download an OGM file, I convert it into an avi, cause there really is no freaking difference. I can't get Stellvia of the Universe in dubbed format. I can't get Stratos4 in dubbed format. I can't get Onegai Twins in dubbed format. It's a worthless container that will die out like ogg vorbis.

Also you are a moron. OGM is not the video counterpart of ogg vorbis audio. OGM is a container for video and audio. The video is usually encoded in divx/xvid and the audio is encoded in ogg.

I have a slightly related question:

first of all, /can/ you convert OGM directly to dvd format? if so, what do you use and where can you find it?

if not, what do you use to convert it to avi and where could i find it?

if anyone could answer these it would be awesome ^^;;;;

I have to agree with Khan about the ogm been only a container, but still you are thinking like an 8 track. Fansubbing will be changed to ogm soon, that way we can keep the video file clean + to be able to have more lenguages at the moment of release. Ogg vorbis has the best compresion for a audio track, keeping in mind the quality of the audio insted of the size only...not to mention the good compression on a dual audio encode. Xvid and ogg vorbis is the best encode compression in my opinion. For kumori, you can't go back to dvd on any type of encode, maybe you could put the video back to mpeg2 on a dvd but you would have to make a enhanced svcd for subtitles to work, witch is to much for after people encoded it. Keep the ogm with your heart!!!

Is it that time of the month for you?

I was pretty thrilled at first when I figure out how to play an ogm file, but that was just a momentary thing. I don't really mind if the container is avi or ogm, as long as it has quality.

btw unless tvtokyo implement English dubbing somewhere I doubt fansub groups can incorporate ogm into its uses.

Hmz well OGM does use divx/Xvid encoding in it's containers. The BIG advantage is the dual audio part. When you installed all the ogm stuff properly you could be able too choose between ie japanese and english audio. Also you can choose what language subs you want. OGM imho is the way of the future... not all fansubbers agree (yet). I can see why... I think it's mostly personal...

The problem is, I'm not at ALL interested in watching anime in any language apart from Japanese, so ogm's are a waste of time for me. Sure my computer is set up to play ogms, but I'd much rather download .avi than anything else. Plus as someone said earlier, when you download the most recent series, there's only one lanuguage track and that's Japanese. Ogm makes more sense to those who support the pirates who rip anime DVDs wholesale.

-- Anonymous, September 09, 2003

yeah, I agree. who needs any other language but Japanese?

-- Anonymous, September 09, 2003

AVI can also do dual audio, the things it couldn't do which ogm can are chapters and turning subtitles on and off, you can also edit subtitle colors.

-- Anonymous, September 09, 2003

There isn't any point in using ogm files Dubbed anime is crap. Switching languages and turning on subs is an annoyance. Ogm will die

-- Anonymous, September 13, 2003

I think you can change the default settings for the sounds(jap/eng) and subs(on/off).

-- Anonymous, September 13, 2003

Yeah, cool, yeah, right, AVI Rules!!! blah...

I only need one audio track (Japanese Rules, yeah!) and it is annoying to switch on and off subs. I don't care. I will learn Japanese to watch anime, yeah, cool... And, since I don't nedd/want that stuff it will die and nobody in this world will ever use it!!!

But... there is more than anime-die-hard-I-am-soooo-cool fans out there, and, even though this is an anime forum, it is quite stupid to believe that some new/great technology will fade out and die just because we don't need it.

OGM is just better that AVI as a MM container. It will or will not survive depending on many factors, but basically, progress is always welcome, needed or not. And, buy the way, I still remember someone saying something like "Who will ever need more than 640 Kb of Memory???" You might not need OGM but believe me, some WILL and it will survive and, eventually, replace other formats until it is replaced by a better one.

Evolution, my dears, evolution...

That was Bill Gates.

"As soon as I download an OGM file, I convert it into an avi, cause there really is no freaking difference."

If there is no difference, why convert it in the first place?
