Statehood for Liberia

greenspun.com : LUSENET : A.M.E. Today Discussion : One Thread

We should admit Liberia to the Union and make it our next state. Liberia was founded by US Slaves and the official language is English. Our country would then be called: The United States of America and Africa. This would give us a foothold and gradually we could add other African Nations until all were in the Union. We would be truly integrated and all of us would be true "African-Americans". However Blacks could no longer be called a Minority, and we would have to give up Affirmative Action also.

Pastor Paris, I can't tell for sure, but I trust that your tongue is firmly in your cheek.

I doubt that Liberia would even want to be a part of the USA. If I remember my history correctly, Liberia was founded by US slaves who were disenchanted with America and the American system. We (USA) certainly do not need to inherit the problems of Liberia; we still have enough of our own.

I have felt for years that the United States should welcome Liberia as a state. The founding peoples of Libera, far from disliking the United States, felt a fondness and appreciation for the values and asperations of the American people. Why else name their country's capital in honor of an American President, James Monroe?

The great State of Texas, the land where I was born, was one a separate nation. For ten years she was independent, then by referendum and petition, as the United States to accept them as a member of the Federation.

Liberia can and should become the 51st of the Union. The people of Liberia are our cousins. It it time that we recognize that relationship. We, the people of the United States should offer and invite the people of Liberia to join our Union.

Blessed Be,

I tend to agree with you. The founders of Liberia were disinchanted with the way the American System was being administered, not in the system itself. That is why black Americans have remained loyal to theis nation. MLK spoke of "living out the true meaning of our creeds".
