MTD Lawn Mower - battery / Voltage Regulator problems?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Freedom! self reliance : One Thread

Hi all,

I bought a new (actually a remanufactured) 12v battery for my MTD riding mower. It worked fine the first couple times I cut grass, but then it was about 2 weeks between grass cuts & the motor wouldn't even turn over. I can jump start it & it runs fine, but if I shut if off & wait for more than 2 mins before restarting, I turn the key & nothing happens.

I don't think my battery is charging.

Oh yeah, they checked the battery before selling it to me & it was fine.

Therefore, what do I need to replace on my lawn mower? Voltage Regulator? Is the Voltage Regulator the "alternator" for a small engine?

Thanks, Dale J. Giardina

Dale. Just because the battery was checked out when you bought it doesn't mean it's ok now. My guess is that it "went south" and is no good. Before I spent any money replacin any parts get the battery checked out first. Matt.24:44

Thanks for the quick response!

I'll get the batt checked out.

Since I won't be at my computer over the wknd, could u give me a list of most likely problems (in order of most probability) in case the battery is good?

Dale! If you can put jumpers on the battery terminals and it will turn over the engine and start--the only thing I can think of is #1. The Battery. #2. Bad cable ends. I don't think it will be anything except the battery tho. old hoot. Matt.24:44

I'm having a very similer problem and I highly doubt that it is a problem with the battery. I had the problem happen, got a new battery and after running the mower a short time the power completely vanishes. Either the battery is sucked dry..or their is a problem elsewhere in the system.

Hello. It sounds like your mower has the same problem as my tractor recently had. It would start w/ jumper cable but not on its own even after charging. After extensive searching the problem was found to be a loose wire on the battery gauge. I don't know if your mower has a battery gauge but you should check all electrical wires and make sure they are secure and have good connections. Hope this helps. Let me know if it does.
