Hello again, I would like to know where the title "Four Horsemen" came from. I'm preparing a mini-workshop and would like to know just in case I'm asked.

The concept to the "Four Horsemen" originates in the Book of Revelations (chapter 6) metaphorically describing four horses of specific color conquering, power, justice and death. These are the basic apocalyptic themes which define the Church of Christ. Many organizations have adopted the concept of "four horsemen" to describe their own key or fundamental issues. Ecologists and like-minded individuals concerned about the stewardship of the earth talk about the four horsemen consisting of 'pollution, poverty, famine and war'. When applied to the AMEC the "Four Horsemen" refer to the four Bishops which greatly shaped and influenced the development of this Zion (Richard Allen, Paul Quinn, Daniel Payne & Henry McNeil Turner). Subject to check, but I think the AME adoption of the "Four Horsemen" originated with the bicentennial in 1987. QED

Bible scholars generally agree that the Four Horsemen in the Revelation of John represent Jesus, War, Famine and Death. Since only one of these is good, I will hesitate to liken this phrase to that Book. I should rather liken then to the T. V. or movie series "Star Trek". This is to go where none have ever gone before. In pre- aviation history this pioneering travel was on horseback.

I am not sure who first coined this phrase for the pioneers of our church. But perhaps someone else can tell us who did.

Allen, Payne, Quinn and Turner literally took the church to places it had never gone. In doing so they literally defined our mission, our purpose, who we are, and who we shall even yet become.
