First understand his life and education and his readings by reading a biography in print or online. My only comment is how inane and frustrating the form of some of these school questions are. They are very discouraging to the student and with astounding lack of clarity lead one with great anxiety to logically take the wrong direction. Both you and Poe deserve better. Poe is deceptively simple and elusively complex at the same time. His inspiration as a lonely genius led him to discover his poetic core. He knew it would seem odd to seek it and enshrine it in consummate skill in melancholy and fantastic shapes, but that meant more than reality, whether that reality was more tragic or happy. The forms of his setbacks with female relationships began to take the front and center symbols of his art and formed their development. His personal doubts and failings are pervasive as well. His wide searching and energetic critical mind was interested in many subjects, many forms of literature(he tried a novel, a play, a scientific/mystical treatise, humor, allegories, Gothic and invented the modern detective story). All these things would cross over into all his other writings.
