Contraversy: Subbed Vs. Dubbed

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Animes : One Thread

Okay, I know that I have posted this one before. Ages and ages ago, but I would really like to hear what the big deal of watching someone with his mouth closed speak. Dubbed is ANNOYING!!!

Only Robotech has the right to remain dubbed, and Macross because they are equally corny in Japanese.

I would really like to hear someone defend dubbed anime. So far everyone agrees that dubbed sucks and subbed is reasonably awesome. Raw is the best, but then again not everyone speaks Japanese.

Let's hear it!

Yup I have to agree with you..dubbed is crapy. I like to see animes the way they came, for me subbed is the best. To watch an anime that is dubbed, is like watching a completely different show. For example, American Dragonball and DBZ are just not that good. I still watch it cuz i LOVE DBZ but its not the same thing. But that is the way i feel. laters everyone

Dubs are done insolently for the wee amount of money to follow... >___<

Dubs = suckitude all the time. Subs = sucktitude some of the time Which would you rather have?

For the most part I agree with everyone else. If it's not subbed, then you are most likely not getting the entire story (censorship laws, etc). However, I must admit that I am in love with the Hellsing dubbs. The voice actors (Sir Integra Hellsing, Alucard, and Walter for the most part) are really good.

I love bebop dubbed for some reason. Spike sound cool in the dubbed, Jet sounds cool in the subbed. The guy who plays Spike on the dubbed is the guy who plays Tom on toonami. I guess I like bebop subbed and dubbed equally.

I'll agree with Matsaboog, Cowboy Bebop dubbed is sooo much better than subbed. Besides, subtitles go too fast for me and their voices sound all weird then I get distracted by their voices and my whole viewing of the show is shot. I know I'll probably get lots of crap for saying dubbed is better than subbed but I gotta stand up for my opinion, you know?

I'm one of those who says "Dubs are almost always bad." I have seen some good dubs, but I always go with subtitles. With DVDs, you can get the best of both worlds. Normally, I prefer subs, but I have sisters and brothers who would rather have the dubbed versions. To each his/her own. Kate, I respect your opinons on dubs. I have a friend who would rather have subs for one reason... she's deaf.

I like the way this is going.

However, I would like to point out a couple good things about dubbed now that people are defending it.

1) People cannot read and watch at the same time and it can bug some people to have to read and watch

2) Some subbed translations are totally off.

3) Some subbed anime's voices are annoying (like in Jubei-Chan, Ninja Girl, those 3 women who are after Shiro are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO annoying. But that's the point).

4) Some subbed anime have the text overlaying the scenes which can be bothersome.

Here are some bones I have to pick with subbed.

But, the subs have many appealing features to them.

1) Subs let you get a better feeling of the story because the Japanese language can be more expresive then in dubbed.

2) Japanese swearing is awesome, and in dubbed, the most I've heard anyone say is 'damn' in series. Movies are another thing...

Here are two.

I can watch subbed or dubbed, and my liking of it depends on how good of a job was done. For instance, I prefer subbed Inuyasha over the dubbed any day. Mainly because the dubbed actors sound like Ben Stein on one of his more emotional days. On the other hand, I love Cowboy Bebop dubbed because they did a very good job on it and Spike sounds great!

However, on newer anime series I usually end up watching subbed because they are available long before the dubbed episodes are. So my opinion on the whole subbed vs. dubbed thing: if it's done well dubbed can be good, but I also like the subbed too just because you get more of a feel for what the anime was intended to be like. ^_^

I'm also mix but more on the dub side, cuz the feel of the voice it just doesn't feel right, cuz you see I'm French and I've always watched movies the way they came out, if it's French I'll watch it in French, it's English then I watch it in eng. Dont give me Tom Hank speaking French or any other one, exept Dicaprio He still sounds like a 5 year old boy in French, but that's another story. And if an anime that I like is in Russian then I would watch it in Russian with Eng subs. Well, that was me with my opinion today, Back to you in the studio.

Subbed! That is of course till I learn Japanese.

I think that subbed is great and I always try to get my anime subbed. I still think that dubbed is still good though, I downloaded some files from mIRC that were OGM and dual audio so I could watch the anime's in English and Japanese and add or take away subtitles, just like a DVD ^^. I watched Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo and Cowboy Bebop in Japanese and English. OGM rules because u can watch it in both :P.

Its a bit of a toss between subbed and dubbed.

Dub's Good Points

- you can hear your own language for once and don't have to worry about reading

- you don't have to spend hours downloading it or saving up money to buy it, you can just watch it on normal tv

Subbed Good Points

- the japanese voice actors put more effort into to it

- you get the orginal story most of the time..if the translations are done right

- no scenes are took out

I do not hate dubs, as long as they have the original story intact, little edits and still recieve the original charm its fine. Though there are some dubs i have refused to watch >.>
