I presume you are alluding to Jane Stith Stan(n)ard, the mother of Robert Stanard, an early friend of Poe, and a highly empathetic woman traditionally considered as the young poet's first (and intense) love, and, more dubiously, as the ideal "Helen" he did evoke in his 1831 well-known lines beginning with the apostrophic "Helen, thy beauty is to me..." (as romantically told by Poe himself, in 1848, to his brand new love, Mrs Sarah Helen Whitman). This fascinating young woman died in April, 1824, from some disease having altered her mind (tuberculosis?), but not from "brain cancer", to my knowledge. Moreover, "brain cancer" must have been a diagnosis almost impossible to ascertain in Poe's time... Yours sincerely, Raven's Shade (Belgium).
