how did alcohol or his addictions affect his writing?{did he really have a drug addiction?

Alcohol affected his work in the most obvious sense of delaying some of his journalistic work as I believe his boss, Graham, stated. Of course alcohol made him more touchy, and some of his severe criticisms were possibly worsened by it. No, Poe was not a recreational drug usedr.

Yes, alcohol did effect his writing ... but in a positive way. It opened his mind to the universe and whislt drunk allowed him to pull down from the heavens delicious words dripping with milk & honey. Like Li Po he was able to see his reflection and that of the moon, twinned in an infinte realm of possiblity, in the waters of the river of life.Nothing staid or square ... but as Neitzsche said "to be drunk... oh, life... a yes, a no, a straight line, a goal....happiness!"
