operating 2 turnouts with a single switch

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Wiring for DCC : One Thread

I have built a 4x8 ho layout using dcc on the track. I have a total of 17 atlas snap switches (code 100) and am having a problem operating some turnouts.

The problem is I have 4 pairs (8 turnouts)that I need to operate as pairs. (1 switch to each pair of turnouts, 4 switches to operate the 8 turnouts.)

The turnouts all operate fine using a single switch to a single turnout, but when I try to pair them either at the turnout or the switch, one turn out will operate, the other poorly or not at all.

I have used the atlas switches that came with the turnouts and also tried life like switches with identical results.

I am running the switches from a seperate power pack on the ac side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Ray

Ray,

the Atlas switch machines take a lot of current to operate. My guess is that your powerpack doesn't supply enough to operate more than one at a time. The only way to do what you want is to get a robust, higher power source for the switches, say a transformer capable of providing 16 volts at 3 amps or so. Even this may be marginal if you have wired the switches with small gauge wire. Even on your 4x8 layout you will probably need at least 18 gauge wire for your switch machines.

The best solution would be to use a Capacitor Discharge power supply. Some are available commercially. You can also build your own if you want to that route. Dale.

Ray,

I didn't have this reference handy yesterday - may be this will help you out. http://www.awrr.com/cdsupply.html
