The Golden Gate Bridge was undamged by the 1989 'quake. You may be thinking of the SF-Oakland Bay Bridge, which did sustain serious damage to the car deck.

There are many photos of the damages caused by the Loma Prieta Quake of 1989 on the internet. The Golden Gate Bridge, however, didn't sustain any noticable damage, as far as I know; it looked basically the same as it does today. As mentioned before in this thread, the Oakland-Bay bridge DID suffer damage - to its upper deck: And the Cypress Section of I-880 in Oakland had major damages, which took many lives, in which fifty-one spans collapsed. Those of us who lived in the Bay Area at the time will never forget what we were doing when the quake hit.

I lived on Post St, and was walking home from work. I was walking fast down Jackson St when it hit. I couldn't wait to get home to start watching the world series. I have never seen such a site, buildings moving and the clouds of dust rising from the concrete afterwards.

if im not mistaken nothing really happened to it. Most of the damage was east bay for the fact of where the fault was located. But adding to the comment about how no one will ever forget where we were and what we were doing is very true. I was ten and walking downstairs to see the A's whip on the giants and then it hit, the stairs looked like something from space, it appeared as if it was stretching and swaying side to side, my father got home half hour later he had arrived to san leandro heading to union city from the san fransisco when he heard on the radio. Now i live in Vancouver washington but the Bay Area will always be home, and cant wait to move back.
