Looking for a family member...greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread |
Does anyone know of an online site (free?) to find a person by entering their S.S. number? Is that legal or am I only allowed to search by name and/or last known address? I've been looking for my younger sister and I think I've exhausted all my ideas...other than paying for a search. Not sure if she's really worth it!!! But I would like to find her for my mom's sake! Thanks for any input, folks!!

This might not be much help . . . but have you tried your state Department of Public Safety to see if they have any ideas? I know the post the addresses of sex offenders (and I'm not saying your sister is), but they would probably be able to give you the criteria for finding them. If not, then the county clerk could also probably help.I wasn't much help, was I? Sorry, I hope you are able to find some answers.

Thanks, j.r. Your ideas are better than no ideas :-)!! I don't know that my dept. of Public Safety here would be much help, but I am thinking about contacting the county clerk in the county of the last known state that I have an address for her. I have been working on this for the past few months...ever since our family property in Texas was sold. My sister has a small inheritance waiting for her and heaven knows...she could use it!! And like I said, my mom would sure like to know where she is. The bright spot is that I have checked the Social Security death index and her S.S. # is not listed there...yet!!Thanx again!!

Hi Marcia....I don't know if this will help or not, but here goes. When I was looking for an old friend that I had lost contact with, I talked to a gal who does this stuff for a living and she told me to check obituaries; not for the person your searching for, but for relatives (in-laws in this case, maybe). In the obit is always says so and so is survived by so and so from USA County ...or something like that. If you get o the point that you want to hire someone, I will look the gals name for you that helped me. She is pretty cheap. She said, too, that if you look up vital statistics like divorces, marriages, births etc you can often find a clue. Good luck....Idaho Gal.

You've given me a few good ideas, Idaho Gal. My sister's oldest son was (maybe still is) in the military stationed at Newport News, Va. Maybe I could locate him and go from there! And my sister's daughter had a baby a year ago...maybe I could look up birth records for her!!?Time to put my feet up and stretch out on the sofa here with my keyboard and see how much I can "dig up"!! Thanks muchly!!

What branch of the service is your sister's son in? Keith has a friend who's in the Navy and he's stationed somewhere in Virgina, it might be the same place. Maybe he could check into it for you. If he's been discharged the VA might be able to tell you his last address.

I just emailed Keith and he's fairly certain that Rob is at Newport News. We can email Rob this weekend and see if he has any suggestions for who you should contact, if you'd like.Keith did caution that when he was in the Army they weren't allowed to give information about personnel out to civilians, and with the current world situation security is probably even more strict.

I hit send too soon...Keith also said that the Red Cross has a program set up to contact service personnel in case of serious family illness or emergency. I don't know if your situation would qualify but it could be a start.
