Is SVCD and VCD formats the same?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread |
I just want to know if the SVCD format is the same as VCD because my DVD player says it can play VCDs but some of my movies are in SVCD. Please let me know somebody by email. thanks.

Hi, Michael:For NTSC, the Video Bit-Rate of VCD is 1,150Kbps (CBR/MPEG-1/352x240) and that of SVCD is usually higher than 2,000Kbps (CBR or VBR/MPEG- 2/480x480).

VCD is MPEG 1 (similar to VHS standard), SVCD is MPEG-2 (DVD is MPEG 2, so the quality of a SVCD will be nearer to DVD than VHS). Some players have issues playing SVCDs more so than VCDs. I don't know why this is so, seeing as SVCD is MPEG-2, the same as DVD. However, I have tried a few brand name DVDs, and haven't had a problem running either. When you're burning your discs, make sure you burn at a low speed, as I have found that burning fast (16x plus) causes some issues to arise once you play them in yr DVD player.

They might be the same. I have a SVCD player that does play VCD disk. I have opened up the top cover of the machine and noticed that it has one set of sensor which I think DVD need more.
