I might be an old fogy, but, the holiday gifts we give for the under 13 set are made out of wood, either being games made of some type of durable wood, or they are books of some type appropriate for their age, Dr. Suess is always a favorite to give to children under 10.

Hi Kirk! Well let me see, my kids are 16 and 10 now! They got violins for Christmas along with video tape and books on how to play. And they both got bows, that is what they wanted! So we have been doing much target practice behind the barn, and string strumming in the house.

I do a lot of my Christmas shopping at second hand stores and that is where I got them some board games, Guess Who, Scrabble and Disney Monopoly. My oldest daughter has always loved Magic Attic dolls and I found her one in mint condition in a second hand shop for ten bucks! Got my little darlin one of those fancy dolls with pretty dress for ten bucks too.

My husband is laid off this year but by preparing and buying early we did pretty good.

Know what my favorite Christmas gift was? Wool Socks! I love em! My hubby also got me a sewing basket off of an Amish boy that was set up alongside the road, and my favorite Cinnimon tea.

Christmas was wonderful, beautiful and grand. We spent much time cutting out Christmas cookies and taking them to the neighbors and chroceting scarfs and afagans for the people on our list.

My son got alot of video games and Anime models. My in-laws gave him a Play Station 2 that my husband can't understand that he needs because he already has a Nitendo 64. I had to explain that they stop making games so you have to get the newer, better version.

He flipped when he saw the chess set (also has 7 other games)I bought for my neice so I had my sister buy the exact one and give it to her, then I gave this one to him. Saved me shipping fees. Anyway, I don't play chess but have beaten him at three games of checkers already.

My son (four) received some clothing, a few Blues Clues games, and 'moola'. My daughter (nine months) received a Holiday Collection Barbie, a few toys / games, and also some money.

I gave my 11 year old nephew three computer CD games (BMX, Skateland Tony Hawk and Skatepark - or somethin' like that). My five year old niece was given a Disneyland 101 Dalmations CD storybook, which was interactive (you chose the way the plot went).

I know - buying toys is HARD these days. Things sure have changed since I was a little.

One thing that HASN'T changed is the kid's attitudes when opening the gifts.

Is this all I got? What else is for me? How come I can't play with that NOW?

My own personal opinion is that some kids (and grandkids) get waaaay too much for Christmas!! My son's stepdaughters spent lots of time arguing over who got the most toys...they actually keep count!!!

I try every year to limit what the kids get for Christmas, but Bren always overrides me and buys all kindsa stuff. I think some people who have a tough time expressing affection/nurturing, use money as a way to express it, and I think that's the case here. So I just sit back and watch, and later talk to my girls about it. They understand the principles involved. They really are 'spoiled', but are such sweet kids, always seem very greatful; it hasnt affected them in any way other than I sometimes worry a bit that it will be tough for them to manage money when they are on their own since they have virtually anything they need or want now. But I guess we all have challenges in our lives, and that may be one of theirs.
