Can I trick my DVD player into playing a CD-R?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread |
My DVD player manual says it does not play CD-R's. I was wondering if there was a way around this. It said it didn't play SVCD's, but I found a way around that. My DVD player is a Sony DVP S330. I remember reading something about disc colors, anyone familiar with that? Is this a lost cause or can I find a way around this?

U will ultimately find out that, with DVD players below $200 featuring DVD, DVD-R/RW, SVCD, VCD, CDDA, MP3, CD-R/RW (and probably DVD-A) capability and even progressive scan (NTSC) you will just go out and buy one, instead of subjecting yourself to bludgeoning your Sony to play CD-R. Yes it's a lost cause. Tough.

You have two options. 1) Burn to CD-RW. Although your player's manual probably says it doesn't support CD-RW, CD-RW discs are known to work in Sony players such as yours. I can personally verify that Sony brand CD-RW discs work. I would expect other brands to work as well. 2) If you live in the USA, Circuit City sells a brand of CD-Rs by a company named STI. I exchanged email with a guy on another forum and he verified that they worked on his Sony player. The downside is that the quality on these discs is awful. He told me that he has had to burn some of his SVCDs two or three times before he gets one that will play OK on his Sony DVD player. You have to buy the STI discs in packs of 200 :-( Mehmet's suggestion is worth considering. You could get a cheap DVD player that supports CD-R and SVCD and save yourself a lot of hassle over trying to force your Sony to play your discs.

Thanks for the tips guys. I have no problem whatsoever using CD-RW, like I have been. The best part is if you screw up, you get another chance on the same disc:-). My Sony manual says it supports CD-RW's and I haven't had any trouble with the one brands I have tried, Memorex and HP. I was just curious because you can't really buy CD- RW's in bulk like you can with CD-R. I bought the biggest one they had at BestBuy yesterday, 25 CD-RW discs. I am all set, thanks again!

Glad you solved your problem, but you shouldn´t buy big brand DVD players, expecially Sony. They are known for their restricted range of compatibility. A good one, but hard to find player is ´Kiss´. The brand name sounds cheap but it plays absolutely everything. All region codes too.

Another type of DVD player you can purchase is an "APEX", it will play any type of vcd, svcd bootlegged movie. Thanks for the tip on CD-RW's.
