How was everyone's Thanksgiving??greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread |
So....how was everyone's day? Did you all eat too much :-)?? I did! We had a really good day. I had to get up early, having livestock, etc., but Harry stayed in bed and kept it warm for me!! We slept late (9 a.m.), had an enjoyable surprise visit from our son and family and then went out to dinner with my MIL. The friend that we were going to take with us came down with a cold...maybe next year. But we were most happy to see our granddaughter first thing in the morning and our DIL was amazingly "nice"!! We're wondering if maybe she knows that I received my inheritance from relatives in Texas :-)!! Anyways...we thoroughly enjoyed the day. Today we finished up our firewood and then "goofed" off. Tomorrow we're headed out to the big "city" for some Christmas shopping.Getting some snow here tonight. It really looks pretty. My horse has rolled in it several times and is getting cleaner with every roll!!! Supposed to get an inch or so, but it's warming up now...almost 40*. Tell me about your dinners!!!

That's funny about your inheritance and your DIL, Marcia! It's good you get to see the little one pretty often though!Lotus and I spent a good part of the day delivering Thanksgiving dinners to needy families; it was fun! Saw a lot of cop cars about; normally cops make me nervous, but didnt know whether to be glad they were around during our forays into crime-ridden neighborhoods, or be nervous that there was an impending drug bust, complete with gunfire! Coulda been exciting!
But alas, only excitement was trying to find some of the addresses.
Afterward we decided to stop at Boston Market for a turkey dinner. We should have got Swanson's intstead! I was sick for many hours from the MSG; it really affects me, I get all jittery inside, and heart palps, and feel faint. Musta been the (bad) gravy.
Lotus' boyfriend Matt are celebrating a year together this weekend, so he's been in and out of the house last few days. Brought her a dozen lavendar roses tonite. Never seen lavendar ones in person. Such a sweet boy he is. Last night they insisted I go to a movie with them, so we went to see "Frida." Was wonderful. And I ate popcorn for my dinner. Not supposed to eat popcorn of course, but tough, I forgot to bring my usual bag of nuts. They don't sell nuts anymore at movie theatres, unless they're covered in chocolate. Almost bought them, but decided they'd be even worse than the popcorn for fat-producing value.
Bren and Ali come home tomorrow. Vacation over!

I had a good day. There were glitches of course -- I got lost trying to find the dog park where I was supposed to meet my friends, and they didn't have a cell phone with them. The food was all good, nothing over or under cooked, and all ready at the same time. We watched the extended version of Fellowship of the Ring on DVD, punctuated by frequent breaks for tending to the dogs. They were all hyper and weird and had to go outside about 80 times, and they all kept trying to get out to the back porch where the turkey was.
My dog was both good and annoying. Annoying because she would NOT settle down (she's been over there before, so she should have calmed down a lot faster), until about an hour before the movie was over. She was good because she didn't try to eat or squish their new kitten (about 10-11 weeks old) -- tried to lick the kitten all the time. So she gets high marks for treating the kitten well. I had to watch her all the time though, because she tends to be a clod and step on the other dogs and crash into things, and generally make a nusience of herself. So I wasn't as relaxed as I would have been without her.
We also had a movie break for dessert. I brought pumpkin cheesecake (low carb). I hadn't made it before. It was fairly tasty, but I think I like just pumpkin pie better -- and that is much easier and faster to make. Oh well!
I did eat a bit more than my regular eating plan, but I'm back on track today.

I realized that my Thanksgiving and my son's are two different memories. I had told him once we were having a Thanksgiving meal and he said where is the stuffed potatoes and garlic beans. I was thinking of mashed potatoes and cole slaw, like my childhood at MY grandmother's was.My in-laws are great. They have these two hugh tables in the basement (Italian, of course) and have people stopping in and out all day. Same will happen for Christmas. Turkey was great, even the next day...forgot the cranberry sauce though.
EM, if ever you have an allergic reaction again, take a 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda in water. You'll be surprised how fast it clears up. I didn't realize they use MSG, that explains the night headache.

I know what ya mean, Dee, about the difference in memories. You really hate to lose the ones you were brought up with...and yet change is inevitable, I guess! When Harry and I were first married, his mother (Italian) would set up a HUGE table with an amazing variety of "culturely blended" foods. Turkey was "secondary"!! My family would have a strictly "Plymouth Rock" type meal. But Harry and I tried to blend the different traditions in our marriage. He still carries on the "antipasto" dish while I try to carry on the cranberry juice with lemon sherbert tradition. Neither one of us would forget the cranberry sauce, though :-)!

Mine was really busy. Did the actual 'feast' at mom's house (boy did I ever eat), then spent the rest of the day visiting relatives. I was exhausted - the boy was put into 'hyper-drive' with chocolate cake, and I spent a lot of the rest of the day saying 'put that down - don't touch that - NO !' quite a bit of the time.We went to bed at midnight - I was tired. Pretty much the usual.

Well I spent the day tearing down an old shed. My technique is knocking out one wall stud at a time then run like hell! 7 studs out and the thing finally fell over! My Thanksgiving was not getting killed.Went to Barb's house for dinner. Nothing too special. Just enjoy looking at that woman who I've known for 25 years. We've lived together on and off and never married but still seem to be a familly. Anyway she's still sooo beautiful.
I'm thankful for not getting killed by my shed and having Barbara to look at!!! Ha!.....Kirk
