Electronic Structure of the atom

greenspun.com : LUSENET : quaternions : One Thread

1) I would like to know about the electronic structure of the atom and the relations with Niel Bohr's model of the atom, de Broglie and Schrodinger's equation(with a simple summary and explanation of how it is derived) 2) I would also like to know about the relationship of the electronic structure of the atom and quantum numbers and their arrangement as pertains to this, as well as a simple instructions on building up the atom. 3) I would also like to have simple notes on the autoionization of water and closely related topics. Thank you very much for your time.

Hello Jackie:

I don't think I can give you simple answers to all these questions. The three people you mentioned won Nobel Prizes because the work was not simple. Here is the shortest string of answers I can come up with.

Planck guessed that if the radiation from a black body came in integral clumps, then the radiation given off would match the experimental data. His guess was right. For logical consistency, Einstein applied Planck's quanta hypothesis to light. This explained the photo electric effect where photons can be used to push around electrons on the surfaces of metals. Niels Bohr thought that if photons come in clumps, then angular momentum too should be clumpy. When he applied that logic to the atom, he was able to explain the spectral lines of hydrogen. de Broglie reversed this quantum trend. Particles had always been treated as quanta. He suggested that they might in fact also have the characteristics of waves. Experiments in two years time did show such wave-like behavior. Schrodinger's equation is a wave equation that nicely connects all these threads together.

I DON'T HAVE ANY ANSWER BUT I ONLY HAVE ONE REQUIREMENT.THERE IS CAN U GIVE OR SEND ME NOTES ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC STRUCTURE ATOM AND ITS PICTURE OR GRAFIK OR ILLUSTRATION TOO.

Planck didn't say that energy comes in quanta, but that its only Transferred in quantum amounts ( as in resonance phenomena ).This contribution to clarity and truth was given to me by reading Einstein vs. Bohr ( By Mendel Sachs --- His works unify all forces and hint that the two subatomic forces are really manifestations of gravity / EM.). Too bad that Planck's original words have been miscommunicated to what we're used to today.

He recognized that the various physical and chemical properties of the elements depend on the electrons moving around the nuclei of their atoms and that only the atomic weight and possible radioactive behaviour are determined by the small but massive nucleus itself. Rutherford's nuclear atom was both mechanically and electromagnetically unstable, but Bohr imposed stability on it by introducing the new and not yet clarified ideas of the quantum theory being developed by Max Planck, Albert Einstein, and other physicists. Departing radically from classical physics, Bohr postulated that any atom could exist only in a discrete set of stable or stationary states, each characterized by a definite value of its energy. This description of atomic structure is known as the Bohr atomic model.
