Not Catholic. He did shelter at Fordham with the jesuits for a time. One poem centering around mary from a vespers service(Hymn). His religious sentiment was unspecific like many thinkers of his time. Deist, some sentiment about angels in heaven, afterlife etc. His most vsionary work was "Eureka" if you want to get some idea of his personal mysticism and explorations. A cosmic theme similar but not equal to transcendentalists and reincarnation. Reincarnation is part of a lifelong obsession with the dead who come back or never fully die or depart. The book is also seeking an answer to the descent into the abyss of death combined with the universe's relationship to his artistic theory. As with the supernatural the ideas are non-specific and vague for all their power, a sort of existential authentiicity of simply exploring his present state of bewtweenness. What he knew of the painful now, the happier then, and the hoped for to come. A state of rebellious addirmation, uncertainty and loss focussed on the beacon of his poetic "Beatrice" his Muse of art who also cannot be pinned down easily to any one woman.
