Calumny never dies. This legend arises primarily in whole cloth from harsh comments by Rufus Griswold(no friend of Poe's at that time) who trashed the recently deceased in an obituary. As seems incredibly common for such cowardly attacks Rufus himself was the actual corpse hugger,found one morning after breaking into his own wife's mausoleum. That Poe was often found mourning AT his wife's grave is no reason for such a charge, nor is his writing of popular Gothic stories indicative of his personal habits anymore than any other paid horror writer, especially among the romantics of the nineteenth century.

In short, Poe haters always come up with the the same trash and people begin to believe it is true. That he like the characters in his stories, that his imagination came from drugs, necrophilia, a dark depressed and wild eyed drunk and anything worse that our own innocent imaginations might want to accuse him of. Ah but there's SOMETHING to it isn't there? Well, you won't appreciate him by rumour or the slant of people with antipathy for him. Read more of his life and works.

One thing we should all understand: THE CHARACTERS IN POE'S WRITINGS ARE NOT NECESSARILY POE HIMSELF! Just because he writes in first person it does not mean that he actually did the things he wrote about. Frequently misinterpreted works are 'Berenice' and 'Annabel Lee' which can be interpreted as implying necrophilia. Also, he was distraught over the death of his wife, and the other women around him, and just because he was greiving it does not make him a necrophiliac. Ultimately, does it matter whether he was or not, he wrote great poetry and stories so just leave him alone!!!

you know, i read somewhere that for poe, human sexuality was not as important as his search for spiritual beauty, or intellectual superiority, in a woman. in fact, it was kind of creepy...he idolzed physical beauty, but tied in with that was almost a kind of worship, like it made the woman entirely superior...(ladies, i know we're going to take over the world someday, but beauty is NOT everything :p)...personally i think that whole idea of him being a necrophiliac is a complete crock, and what's more, it only sounds more ridiculous when a person hails it as a fact, when you certainly cannot prove anything of those sort...only theorize. but to what end?

What are "sexual orientation skills" anyway? I have heard of sexual skills and sexual orientation, but never convergently. I am just here because Elisha's grammar was indeed horrible, but enough has been said on the subject. P.S. Tony Gittins'grammar wasn't exactly exemplary either, but he's not claiming to be a professor.
