Want to buy a barn?greenspun.com : LUSENET : Beyond the Sidewalks : One Thread |
You can buy a huge barn on eBay! Of course, there is a reserve. But it's fun to look. They'll dismantle it and reassemble it for you. It's located up in Nova Scotia, but they say they'll ship anywhere in the states. Do you suppose they think they'll really sell it on eBay, or is it a way to advertise?Go here to see the barn

Wow!! Nice barn. I'm only a few hours away...maybe I should bid on it! Or maybe Alison should. The hemlock and pine 8x8 timbers alone are worth mucho money!! Wonder what the reserve is?

There are some other dismantled barns for sale on their website. That might give you an idea of the cost.

We used to have the most lovely barn on our farm. It was built into a hill, the walls of the ground floor were fieldstone and the upper hayloft was timberframe. All post and beam construction pegged together, not a nail to be seen. We don't know when it was built, but once when it was painted someone left their initials and the date 1918 in red paint in one corner of the loft.Unfortunately it took one severe thunderstorm too many and started to lean. The insurance company declared it a hazardous structure and threatened to cancel my parent's homeowners insurance policy if they didn't get rid of it. So my parents donated it to the township fire department, who burned it down as a training exercise. My dad salvaged a lot of the stones from the foundation and he used them to edge the flowerbeds around the house, but all those beautiful timbers just went up in smoke. :(

We had a beautiful 36x100 foot hip roof timberframe barn on our farm too, also with stone walls. It's still in great shape, and I miss it alot, especially the smells. Many a time I went up to the loft to sit alone and think. The countryside around here is littered with old barns, in varying conditions of disrepair for the most part. Too too sad :(

There are a number of companies out east that dismantle and resell barns. I wonder why there aren't more done here in the Midwest? Maybe it's because fewer have large timbers (I don't even know if that's true, just speculating)? Actually, some do get remodeled into dwellings, and I know of several that appear to have the old foundation and roof (with those funky solid green hexagonal shingles), but metal siding (barn red, of course!). I think the most UNATTRACTIVE thing about the modern metal barns is their lack of eaves/overhang -- followed closely by their dull grey or tan color and boring slab foundations (I like stone foundations). They get the job done, but attractive they are not.
