Has anyone an idea of when Nikon might release the 70-200mm/f2.8 VR AF-S which they have announced is now in development. If you go to www.nikon.com and select the Japan (in English) link you will find the press release regarding this lense. The reason I'm interested is I would rather have a 70-200/f2.8 VR lense than a 80-200/f2.8 non-VR, all things being equal, that is.

Is it a "Press Release"? Or a "Development Announcement"? LinkIf you cannot wait, there is always the Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 IS USM but you will need an EOS camera body. The good thing is you can choose ANY EOS body, since the Image Stabilizer, Ultrasonic Motor, and Aperture diaphragm will work with all of them.

Thanks Julian; I have been noticing that there are many Canon lenses with this technology, but I guess I am a hopeless Nikon person. It was a development announcement as opposed to a release announcement. Laurel Catherine Pauline

What can be so different: load film, meter, shoot film / pixels :-)There are worse things than being locked-in any system. Like being locked in a system without choice. Choice is good.
FWIW, there is an online reprint of a magazine article comparing IS lenses and VR lens: Link

Oops. Try that Link again.

Julian, what is worse then being locked in a system without a choice is not being able to respect someone elses choice. If, as Laurel has stated, she is a Nikon person, why keep on bothering her with Canon?
Your kind of intolerant behaviour resembles more a kind of religious fanaticism than an attempt to start a civilized discussion between two persons with different viewpoints.
As far as the whole Nikon vs. Canon thing is concerned, I have been using each system next to each other for over twenty years now, and each as its pro's and con's, and both are excellent, as are Leica, Minolta, etc.
So grow up, it's only a camera for godsake, eventually it's someone talent that will decide if a picture is worthwhile or not.

Wow. Paul is reading strange things into what I wrote.Of course anyone is free to choose any camera and system they like / use / afford and can achieve their photographic aims. The creative process occurs despite the limitations of the equipment. That's why I shoot Canon (film) and Nikon (digital).
The pop photo article (predictably) says nice things about the Nikon VR lens. If you shoot Nikon and want a VR lens, choose the 80-400. And soon, the 70-200 VR, if the exciting announcement proves to be correct. If you shoot Canon, choose Canon. If you use another system, you still can choose either Nikon or Canon.
Choice is a good thing. But methinks I said that already.
