Built a chicken tractor out of PVC

greenspun.com : LUSENET : ACountryPlace : One Thread

I built a great chicken tractor out of PVC. I grow my garden in beds rather than rows. I built the tractor the width of my beds. I set the tractor over the beds to clean out the beds and fertilize at the same time. This is very effective for killing bermuda grass, and we plan on building several more.

Sounds great, I have just kicked myself in thinking why didn't I think of that as I make all sorts of things with pvc. The latest tractor I made is in the shape of a tent. Save 12bf in lumber. Now my question is, is it durable enough to keep the foxes and such out? If so, then I guess my next CT's will be out of pvc. Thank you for the post and placing my brain back in practical and affordable construction. Regards.

Yes it is durable enough if you glue the Joints and wire it properly. Also it is better off anchored to the ground, and guarded by dogs.

That's what we are planning to do at night with our chickens in the chicken tractors - pull them up to where our German Shepherd will be. We are also going to try our rabbits in tractors this year.

Did you use regular plans and just adapt the pvc. This sounds like a great idea. much lighter than wood!

I used several 45 degree angles to creat a 10 ft. long tent like structure. It is actually five sided at the width end. If I knew how to post pictures here I'd give you a map.
