Rev. Rogers:We will start with books by Dr. Champion and Bishop Ingram has a book about the basics of the church. Bishop talbot has a book about worship. Older books like by Bishop Bearden adn TUrner tell about polity. Dr. Kenneth Hill has several Christian Ed books. i do not have a title for any at this time but please go to a bookstore or the AME publishing house, under supervison of Dr. Johnny Barbour and he can send you any AME books that you need.

Sinclair thanks for the info, but I was wondering about history books regarding our denomination.

There is one history book that I am aware of it the one pubished by Gregg. It is going to be difficult to get a bookstore to locate AME literature, since they don't assign ISBN numbers. You should contact the AME Pulishing Company directly.

Our denomination has had about five major history books that span its glory. Starting with Bishop Payne, they include works by Bishop Smith, Bishop Wright, the Historian Howard Gregg, and someone else whose name escapes me (could it be McCoy?). Dr. Gregg's book was published around 1980. I had just checked for it yesterday at Barnes and Noble, but couldn't find it there. Modern AME churches are also touched on in Lincoln /Mamiya's book on the modern church from the early 1990s (Duke University Press).I have tried to compile all on-line historical references into a convenient place. You can browse a number of the older books' transcriptions on the web. See my History Page.
The AME Publishing House is now available on-line, as is the Christian Education Department. Between them they should have Bishop Ingram's "SAT" manual, books on stewards, ushers, the AME Hymn Books, the Discipline, the works of Charles Spencer Smith, and a number of others. Another source you can seek out is the church Historiographer, Dr. Dennis C. Dickerson. He compiled notes on AME History that were published about 1995-1996.
Enjoy your reading,

Rev. Rogers,Last year I found "The Romance of African Methodism: A Study of the African Methodist Episcopal Church" at the AME Bookstore in Nashville. It was written by Dr. George Singleton, originally published in 1952 and reprinted in 1985. I am not sure if they still have more copies of it.

Dear Sister Denise, Here is good book for you to read while the snow melts: "Dark Salvation" by H. Richardson. I believe he is the author. It speaks of Mehtodism in North America.
