Anyone tell me how to register a site to get the maximum UK coverage. Very basic one page website, with contact details etc. (:o)

Others will have much better info, but Google is now - quite rightly - all powerful and the main search site to target. Think they've also just signed a mega deal with AOL to further widen their influence both in the UK and worldwide. You can follow the instructions on Google to submit your site, but it will also eventually be picked up by their "robots" which crawl through the web day and night looking for sites. May take several weeks, but it will appear. I believe the important points here relate to things called "meta tags" which are key words inserted in your html script to identify your site. Understand it also helps your chances if other sites link to yours etc.
Are you going to reveal the address Galaxy?!

Thanks benton - when I`ve got a bit further with the page I will, but don`t expect anything too exciting - it`s just a site to point people in my direction if they are looking for a British Shorthair kitten! (:o)

Gal-

Also Alta Vista has a tiny link right at the bottom of it's home page to link your site.
I submitted my site to various engines a couple of years ago with poor results - most of them didn't really seem to pick it up. Probably my fault in the way my page was constructed though.

Hi Galaxy A few years ago I spent ages trying to get our web site to the forefront of some of the search Engines. It isn't just registering in the right places but having the right key words/phrases on the "home" page. So Knowing the most likely key words people will search on is the most important bitFor instance if some one searches "cats" and this word appears more on your page than others you will be higher up the listings. There are lots of ways to do this....type your keyword/words lots of times in the spaces in the same colour as the background, they aren't seen by us mere mortals but the search engines web crawlers pick them up. I believe this practise is frowned upon by some search Engines
I also found you have to keep working at it registering and reregistering on a regular basis or you quickly drop down the rankings.
If I remember rightly there were programmes available on the web which submit your site to Zillions of search Engines..Sorry I don't remember the exact details but I found registering individually with the main sites seemed to be more effective.
Hope this helps
