Vermont vs New Hampshiregreenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread |
I am currently In upstate Ny .Hubbys work has a company in Claremont NH which he spent 2 weeks working at .He liked the mill better than his in NY .They stated they would love to have him transfer down there. The advantages would be that I would be closer to my family in Ct .I am settled where we ae and not sure if i am crazy about relocating AGAIN .I am also not sure about land prices .We could be 45 min fom Claemont in NH or Vermont .I know one has tax advantages ,but which one ? Anyone in the area got a guess what 60-100 a with or without a house may go for .Thanks.

Patty, I don't know land prices in that area. Here in southern Vermont the 13 acres down the road is going for 22,000. I believe property taxes in NH are higher than VT. But, don't quote me! What I can tell you is the folks here are great. A search on the internet for realters in the area you're interested in would probably be helpful. As for relocating, I've done plenty of that. I understand your reluctance. I've found that it is never as hard as I thought it would be to make friends and start anew. Hope this helps!

Thanks , I am finally getting this house finished and the thought of starting all over is well not good.I did contact a few agents .If we get serious I think I will probally post some ads in local papers. It's strange because are first choices would have been Vt or NH but we found this place at a really great price .I have 140a here and really don't need that much .

Vermont has a no-permit carry concealed weapons philosophy. I would go with Vermont, the most level-headed state in the union.

Hi Patty. I am lucky, I live in New Hampshire but all of my view is of Vermont.I live right along the Connecticut River, which seperates the two states. I love both states, they are both beautiful and both have there good and bad points just like any other state. I spend as much time in Vermont as I do in New Hampshire. It is really hard to tell one from the other as far as scenery goes and the attitudes of the people. I think New Hampshire may have higher property taxes.I am just south of Claremont, New Hampshire so am familiar with that town.
Both states really have a lot to offer. There are some great country fairs in both states and always something going on during the weekends.

All other things being equal, you might want to consider that New Hampshire does not have sales tax or state tax, but Vermont does. In N.H. property taxes are pretty high. In our town it was, if I remember correctly, $44 per 1,000 of value. So a place assessed at 100,000 would require $4,400 in property taxes. But the towns are different in the taxes they charge. It seems to me that there are not that many farms or plots of land as big as you mentioned. Mostly smaller farms, it seems, just in my experience of the places I looked at and knew about. Good luck. Ayuh.
