We considered earlier how we may possess the promises God has for us. Now let's discuss how they may be derailed through an evil report. Again, looking at Israel on the verge of entering Canaan we see them send out 12 spies, and 10 return with an evil report which deflated the vision of the people.

What the 10 said was true. There really were huge obstacles to the conquest. But the words of Caleb and Joshua were even more true when they said, "If the Lord is pleased with us He will lead us into that land...and will give it to us."

Faith begins when the will of God is known. Once God has given you clear direction, what's seen becomes unimportant no matter how true. Those challenges simply become opportunities for God to demonstrate His power. We need to be like Joshua and Caleb in those times, men who had different spirits than the 10.

We must also mix patience with faith. These things come in God's timing, but while you're patiently waiting for the word "go", your faith must never waiver.

Finally remember that presumption isn't faith. Your Word from the Holy Spirit must be sure. Concocting your own promise will result in your trying to possess the promise in your way, and an Ishmael will be born.

Folks, an evil report brings two things if heeded: Doubt and death. As God speaks promises to you expect evil reports, even from your Christian brothers and sisters. They'll point out obstacles, and their points may be true. But there's something even more true, and that's the Word God has spoken to your heart. Just as turning from God's promise to Israel sent them to the wilderness and death, so it will happen to your vision. Can you afford to not go after that promise once God has spoken it to your heart?
