My goat had pneumonia. We treated her under supervision of a vet with Naxcel for ten days. After a few days, her sickness went away. We finished the prescribed ten day treatment with the Naxcel. Then after four days, the stuffy nose/short and shallow breaths returned but this time it wasn't pneumonia, thank god. Once more by a vets supervision, we put her on Naxcel for five days. By the fourth day, she still had a runny/stuffy nose. She has a runny nose, which is how the first time pneumonia started out. AND she sounds like she really needs to blow her nose. What can I do? As Naxcel is broad spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria including lactamase- producing strains, it should of taken care of any regularly encountered bacterial infection.

I'm not going to second guess your vet, but do suggest that you monitor and record any elevated body temperature, depressed physical appearance, increased respiratory rate, coughing and/or loss of appetite.

Jane, at the feed store is a product called Vet RX for sheep and goats.This comes in a bright yellow (small) box. This is a wonderful natural product! I have had several goats over the years display a stuffy/runny nose and I put a couple of drops in each nostril several times a day until clear. The goats love the stuff (not the first time because you have to hold their heads up). Give it a try. In His Grace, Sissy

If you are in a warm climate then respiratory troubles can lead to pnemonia. When we moved to AR a yr ao, gosh, where does time fly. They developed it from the change in climate and heat.

Anyways, a few of my kids got pnemonia as did one of my milkers i got a week before we moved, the kids did too, they were bought before we moved. We used Neoflour, it is highly effective and you only give it twice, once when noticed and then again 3 days later. Thats been our expeeience with it, you need to get from vet. Jane, can't even imagine Naxcel not taking care of anything that could be causing this, and 10 days? You are one wealthy woman :) What kind of conditions is she living in? Is the barn needing of cleaning? Is their ammonia smell at her level in the barn? Have you limed the barn recently and she has inhaled it? Do you live in a wet area where their is snails on your property? Have you tried any over the counter preperations like benedryl or Robotussin, vets do though rarely perscribe, antihistimants, go to saanendoah.com for the information on dosage. You may want to also boost her immune system. When you have one doe out of many constantly sick you have to look at the cause, failure to thrive from good quality of colostrum at birth, or pnemonia and scarring of the lungs from a poor quality beginning, cocci scaring of the small intestine, all cause adults who are "hot house flowers". If you are having trouble with more than one doe, than look into your nutrition management and also your barn. Vicki
