Hi all,

I have a fully weaned 3 month old buck who has had diarrhea for 3 days now. I took him off of everything except for hay when it started. I thought it would have cleared up by now, but it hasn't. There is no bad smell to it, it is just medium brown in colour, and quite liquidy.

I think what caused this is that got into the grains and over-indulged a few days ago.

Answers

Coccidiosis also causes diarrhea. It may be a good idea to ascertain that it was only the grain, and not cocci.

Getting into the grain didn't help, but was he wormed and on cocci prevention after weaning? After the stress :) of weaning? Vicki

Activated charcoal works really well if the cause is any kind of toxin whether chemical or bacterial. Use charcoal from your wood stove if you have one. Crunch it up real well and make a paste to put in his mouth, or mix with more water and make him drink it. It is gritty but has no flavor. Do NOT use charcoal briqquets. kim

Yesterday, I tried the pepto, and then some electrolyte solution, and this morning the diarrhea is a bit thicker, but still there.

I will be taking a stool sample to the vet today, but in the mean time I am am bottle feeding him water consistently. He is just happy to be getting a bottle again, and doesn't seem to realize that it's water and not milk. Ha ha.

I will post the results of the fecal when I find out.

For diarrhea a raw scrambled egg will work, yes goats and cows eat eggs. Or cheese will cork um up, after all it is milk. Just a thought, give it a try

For people as well as animals, blackberry juice (no seeds or fruit, just juice) works wonders to firm up loose sttols. You can pour it off canned berries, or press it out of fresh, either/or. Even the juice from store bought canned berries works, as does blackberry wine.

The fecal results came in and worms were the culprit. I had just wormed them about a month ago, but I had just let them outside for the first time about a week ago. The vet said that that sudden exposure to the dorment worms outside, caused this problem.

After worming them, I kept the one with the bad diarrhea on the pepto, and it cleared up fast.

Some of the suggestions that people posted I didn't get to try, but will remember them for the next time..........and as long as I keep goats, there will be a next time!

Betty Jo, the other remedies on the board are fine for simple diarrhea, caused by new grass, eating clover, to much milk etc. But the home remedy approach alone is why so many goats, especially young ones die from dehydration from diarrhea. Goats get diarrhea for specific reasons, be them cocci, worms or bacterial/virus, you must treat the disease/virus/protozoa first, then home remedies are fine for controling the fluid loss. If you had not wormed these animals and just used the home remedies the diarrhea would have presisted, the blood loss would have persisted and the goat would have died.

Now.............:) What you worming with, and take another fecal in 7 days after worming to see if it worked or not. Vicki

I understand what you are saying about the home remedies, and getting to the root of the problem first.

For me the home remedy didn't work until I found the problem that caused it. I am glad I got that fecal done when I did.

Thanks for suggesting what the possible causes could be so promptly. Your quick response had a lot to do with me saving him.
