How soon can a baby bunny leave it's mother?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

We have a litter of rabbits that is three weeks old, and a friend wants one of the babies. Is it too soon to let her take it home? It is eating hay and grass and such, and seems like it's big enough.

What do you think?

if its eating on its own, and drinking water,, it can be on its own,, as long as you dry the mother

Had a 2 week old escape last year, eyes just barely opened! I opened the cage and he darted out! he is still out! I catch a glimse of him from time to time up in the hills and once in awhile I see him under the does cages.

It would be HEALTHIER for the rabbit if you wait until it is at least 5 weeks old. Think of a two year old human, it's starting to eat solids but still needs it's bottle.

I was in 4-H and bred rabbits, and we learned no sooner than 6 weeks for any breed...out of compassion for the mother and baby- it is traumatic for rabbit (emotionally and physically) to leave it before then, and may result in not-as-good health later on.
