Ended up buying a different goat

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Dairygoats : One Thread

Well, I went to get my goat yesterday and one of the 2 pregnant ones there had her water break as we stood there looking on. Instead of buying 1 of those 2 I went to another mans house and bought a 3quarters nubian 1fourth Oberhasli. She just had a little buck Thursday and her udder is pretty good as far as I know what to look for. No extra teats, good udder attachment, its made evenly and the teats are long enough to grasp well. She is very tame and let us handle her baby when we needed to. I think shes going to be just wonderful!! We named her Poppy. Can someone tell me what if any immunizations the little guy needs at this time? Hes 3 days old. Also do I need to milk her now to build up her volume or leave her alone until he's a certain age? Sorry for so many questions. I'm going to the archives now to see if I can find out anything. I'm so EXCITED!!!

Milk her twice a day. The kid will still get plenty of milk. I don't think he wil be needing any shots- I mean, he will be meat, right? If he will be a pet for someone, then yes wether him and get him his shots.

I think Rebekah means to say that the buck kid has no "breeding" value and should be wethered so that you won't have promblems with his behavior in the family in the future. This is not one you wan't to keep except in the freezer. And don't name him. Unless you want a goat cart whether. And speaking of goat carts. Does anyone here have any cart plans?

Thank you Rebekah and Dennis for the info. Yes he will be wethered this week and used as a cart animal to move feed and stuff. Rebekah, I haven't been at this long enough to contemplate EATING one of them!!! Whats it taste like? Can I go ahead and give CD&T to him this young? I think I need to post another question at the top. Thanks

Young tender goat meat is GREAT. Especially compared to the hassle of dealing with a wether day after day..:-)

It tastes somewhat like lamb or venison, but without the gamey flavor of either. Two to four months old is just about right.
