Beseler 23c lens boards - why three types?

greenspun.com : LUSENET : B&W Photo - Printing & Finishing : One Thread

I notice from the B&H web site that Beseler makes three types of lens boards for the 23c, one recessed toward the film side, one recessed toward the lens side, and one with an extension. The description says that the first type is for the short lenses, the second type is for intermediate focal lengths (75-90, I believe), and the third type is for 105mm and up. (I'm going from memory on the focal lengths.)

I believe that I have heard references to problems focusing the longer lenses, so I understand about the need for a lens board with an extension. I am currently using a 90mm lens on a short focal length board and have no problem getting it to focus. Is there any other reason that I should try to get a board with the recess going the other way?

If it "ain't" broke don't fix. All the 23 C's in our labs and the regular board for all focal lens with no problems.
