In Epesians Paul speaks of the full armor of God. A quick examination reveals that in the Christian life there is armor, and there are weapons. In other words, defense and offense.

The defender draws a line in the sand against the devil. He or she says, "Not in here you don't! Not me, not my family, not my church or community or world. You've taken enough territory, and now you're finished." A defender's key word is committment. You'll do whatever it takes to hold off the enemy from the territory God has entrusted to you.

As important as defense is, that's about as far as many Christians and churches get in the war. They'll tell you how hard it is, how tempted they are, how difficult the trials of life are, and how they're just hanging on. I understand there are times when we come under attack, but too often this is their line year after year after year. Doesn't sound like a victorious life to me.

Praise God, we are more than conquerors! If you and your church can just get around to the offense part, you'll be way ahead of many western Christians and churches. We need more Christians and churches who carry out effective offensive operations. Individuals need to be marching into the territory satan possesses in their own lives, territory he now owns in the lives of their families, territory he now owns in our churches, and finally, territory he now owns in the world. We are to be all about pulling down the strongholds of the devil.

Right now satan is doing what great conquerors have always done. He's attacking, keeping us off balance, keeping us falling back, on the defensive, trying to draw another line, trying to overcome the same old problem areas. As long as we're rocking back on our heels, it'll be very hard to ever get around to the offensive.

The feeble and inept posture embedded in many "church folks" is directly attributable to their low Biblical IQ. Paul's miliary metaphor about the whole armour of God strongly suggests we are equipped with offensive weapons, e.g. sword. If we would simply commit to an edifying understanding of the Bible we would know that our calling is that of a royal priesthood, a chosen generation. Instead, due to laziness and reckless spiritual indifference we commit to a superficial understanding of the Word which causes our "defense shields" to be lowered and a dulling of our swords. The end result becomes worldly incarceration. It would be encouraging for many to listen again to a popular gospel tune recorded in the early 90s which proclaimed "I went to the enemy's camp and took back [sic] what he (Satan) stole from me (God's blessings)". Unfortuantely I can't remember the name of the choir which recorded this great song of strong affirmation. QED
