VCD won't play on Panasonic DVD-RV20 player

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Video CD : One Thread

I have a Panasonic DVD-RV20 player and also a SONY DVD player. I eventually found out that the Panasonic DVD wouldn't play VCD's. I burt some for my SONY player using CD-RW and they played, but not for the Panasonic. I burnt some more for my SONY player on CD-R's and they played but not on my Panasonic. What am I doing wrong. I use CLAD XP, DVD 2 AVI, TMPGEnc and NERO for burning. How come nothing works on the Panasonic even though in big letters on the front, it says DVD\VCD ??????

Please help me!!!!

The question isn't "Does your DVD player support VCD?". The question is "Does your DVD player support VCD on CD-R/W media?" Apparently not. If you go to http://www.vcdhelp.com, look at the DVD player compatibility list and see if your DVD player supports burnable media or not. My guess is that it doesn't. If your player is not listed, you will have to look at the owner's manual to see if it support CD-R or call Panasonic and ask them. You might be surprised, but a lot of major manufacturers don't support CD-R media at all on their DVD players.

Does Nero complain the the MPEG-1 (VCD) file is incompatible? Is the file produced MPEG-2 (SVCD)? Check the output is not, VCDX, may explain why it plays on one and not the other!

It could be media :

Most recent DVD players, past 2 years, use standard compatible IDE drives! An old drive may not read CD-R media, CD-R media only really differs from mastered media in the size of the biased pit and the dye.

To bias the pit deeper for older drives, burn at single speed, failing that use another media, like Cyanine (type 0) dye or/ CDRW media!!

SONY and PANASONIC drives will read of CDRW media, so this might be a good test.
