Was Edgar Allen Poe a homosexual?
-- Anonymous, March 26, 2002
Explicit material about Poe's sex life is practically non-existent. However, judging from comments made about a fellow poet and his "companion" the tone would seem to be that Poe was not, not hiding or defensive.

All one needs to do is read Poe's poetry and look even briefly at his life to conclude that he definately was NOT a homosexual. He married (although she was his first cousin and only 14) and he had love affairs with other women. Several of his poems were written about women and there is absolutely NO material that even suggests that Poe was a homosexual. He was a passionate man but that does not make him a homosexual. --Peter Marsall Haugo. --john 3:17.

Im doing a research paper on poe and he married his cousin when she was 13 NOT 14. He however was 27 years of age. He was not a homosexual, you could read his poetry and determine that. But if he was It wouldnt surprise me everything else was wrong with with him. He was a genous but they have hospitals for people like him.

yes his wife was 13 but he was 26 not 27. yes he was a Genious, there was nothing wrong with him he just was interesting and had a drinking problem, he wasnt crazy that anyone has proof of. His writing did suggest that but what about stephen king, nobody thinks he nuts.

He died in a hospital...he had been talking to the ceilings and windows, that was only after he wandered around in the streets apparently really out of it--crazy and on opium/alcoholism. depression is a clinical disorder as well, he was said to have attempted suicide...poor guy. Anyway, he loved women, he just wasn't a nymphomaniac. Many quotes from him supporting that as well as the observations of his critics and acquaintances."the most powerful, if not absolutely sole spell, which rivets my interest in women--after all, what man truly LOVES in a woman is simply her WOMANHOOD" -Poe
“In the beauty of woman, in the grace of her step, in the luster of her eye, in the melody of her voice, in her soft laughter, in her sigh, in the harmony of the rustling of her robes. He deeply feels it in her winning endearments, in her burning enthusiasms, in her gentle charities, in her meek and devotional endurances; but above all-ah! Far above all-he kneels to it, he worships it in the faith, in the purity, in the strength , in the altogether divine majesty of her love.”-Poe

Why does it matter to you anyway? What good will it do for you? Hmmm...let's see..."Oh! I want to tell everyone that Poe is (Insert sexuality here)! I'm cool now!" Please...do us all a favor...go kill yourself. Well, if you don't want to do that then just do something for your family and stop using their last name...

Children, Children. Calm down. Don't get overworked by the issue of Poe's sexuality. We will most likely never know whether or not he was gay, and what does it matter... alot of men were.. and even now, we have a significant gay population. All you can do is look at the evidence that you consider relavant and judje for yourself. Personally, I could care less.

Poe was passionate but it dosn't mean that he was gay. He might have had a lot of dark thoughts and all but so does Steven King it depends on how u deal with it I guess

although he is not a homosexual.there is definitly something strange in his attitude to love and sexuality.he thinks the most beautiful thing is a beautiful women's death.it sounds he is a little abnormal, dosn't it?

To the lady that stated she would not be surprised if he was because everything else was wrong with him: Is that not the most ignorant statement on the page or what? I don't think that he did not like women but he was too brilliant of a mind to limit himself.
