MEG RYAN GIVES UP ON ROMANCE

Mar 13, 2002 (WENN via COMTEX) -- Hollywood actress MEG RYAN will have little research to do for her new movie - because it's based on divorce.

In an ironic twist, the blonde beauty, who is better known for hit romantic flicks like WHEN HARRY MET SALLY, SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, YOU'VE GOT MAIL and KATE & LEOPOLD, will star in WEDLOCKED as a woman who wants to end her matrimonial union.

The actress' own marriage to DENNIS QUAID crumbled in 2000 when she and RUSSELL CROWE embarked on a torrid affair whilst filming movie PROOF OF LIFE together in London.

In Wedlocked, Ryan will play a lawyer whose therapist fingercuffs her to her husband for 48 hours after the couple announce they intend on splitting.

In news that has left the film community in shock, actress Meg Ryan has taken a radical new direction with her career and is planning to star in a romantic comedy. This move has caught many by surprise as the actress, acclaimed for her portrayals of King Lear and Chekov's Uncle Vanya, has opted for a more 'light and fluffy' role to broaden her range.

Ryan is in talks to star alongside Richard Gere in Wedlocked, a comedy which stars the pair as divorce lawyers who feel their marriage is all but over. In a last bid to save their relationship, the pair seek the counsel of a wise and learned therapist who decides the only option is to fingercuff the pair together for 48 hours.

While this bold move has yet to be finalised on paper, Ryan is reported to be set on the role. As to whether audiences will be prepared to accept Ryan as a candy-floss heroine in a no-brainer romantic comedy, only time will tell.
