Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a refrigerator with a freezer that is not frost free? Because of energy savings and also to keep our ice cream better I am in search of one. A few years ago while looking into energy consumption it appeared they may still be available. My frost free freezer in the frig gets ice anyway, so now that I am in need of a new one I wanted the old type. Would imagine if any manufacturers make them, they will be more expensive. I want an eletric one. Thanks.

From what I understand, it's not a difficult thing to disconnect a self defrosting unit in any refrigerator---anybody with refrigeration expertise would be able to do it.Home cheesemakers commonly do it to make a less dry aging place for their cheeses.

You can certainly still get them here, and they are less expensive - after all the auto-defrost is additional to the basic function. They also help the manufacturer's energy-efficiency ratings, since they aren't using that extra energy to defeat the purpose of the freezer.

Frost free refrigerators are available almost anywhere appliances are sold. They are usually very cheap and smaller. They're the ones that typpically the stores would rather you not buy. And you are so right about them keeping frozen foods longer.
