Using glass kettles on wood stove

greenspun.com : LUSENET : Countryside : One Thread

Greetings folks,

We have been cooking on a wood stove for almost 2 years. Mostly I use cast iron and Revere Ware kettles, but we just picked up a Pyrex glass coffee pot at a flea market. I'm somewhat hesitant to use it on the stove. Has anyone else used glass pots & pans on their woodstove?

if used with a trivet,, shouldnt be a problem

Charleen: I haven't tried one on my woodstove, but I remember years ago when the pyrex glass coffee pots first came out that you could buy a metal do-hickey that you would on the burner element and that prevented the glass from breaking in case the coffee pot went dry. It is sort of like a trivet but not cast iron. You might try a thrift shop.

I've been cooking with glass-Corning's Vision cookware-for about 2 years now. They've been excellent. I prefer them as their weight seems to keep them a bit more steady. I also like being able to "see" what's going on. They've got teflon bottoms and I get very little "sticking" on the bottom compared to using them on the electric stove. However, except for the occasional teapot, I don't let things boil dry!
